LEARNER TRANSITIONS

Both SFUSD and CCSF are dedicated to helping adult learners meet their goals, and to successfully transition from high school to post-secondary education, from non-credit instruction to credit instruction, or from education to work and career. Our strategies include dual enrollment (attending college while still in high school), credit recovery for high school students who need to make up credits in order to graduate on time, short term job training, and academic and career pathways that empower students to plan their futures.

DISTANCE LEARNING

We recognize that adult education students have many family and work commitments that can make attending classes in person challenging. Distance learning and virtual support services give adult students the flexibility to attend school while still meeting their other obligations. Even before the COVID emergency CCSF was investing in the development of online options for adult students to earn their high school diploma or improve their English. Those online options for classes, counseling, and tutoring have been expanded since the shelter-in-place order was instituted in March 2020, and will continue to provide flexible education options as we move toward a post-pandemic reality.

IMMIGRANT INTEGRATION

We welcome and celebrate immigrants to our community! SFUSD has high schools designed to serve the needs of young adults who are recent immigrants. CCSF hosts those students in college classes at the same time, so students earn both high school and college credits. Adults can complete their high school diploma, learn English, or prepare for their US Citizenship exam at CCSF. We work with Dreamers and other immigrants to earn their AB540 nonresident tuition exemption to support their further education. CCSF’s virtual student service counters can all provide information and services in students’ first language through on-demand, real-time interpretation services. And, we partner with local nonprofit organizations to host periodic citizenship events that register hundreds of adults to begin the naturalization process.

EQUITY and RACIAL JUSTICE

The Consortium is committed to addressing equity and opportunity gaps, and institutionalized racism at our schools. This includes identifying where there are gaps and creating targeted strategies to close them. SFUSD provides early college experiences at CCSF for underserved students to foster their educational success. We have invested in extensive professional development for our faculty and staff in teaching and supporting men of color, anti-racism, racial microaggressions, implicit bias, and equity-minded teaching. We are currently focusing on how to contribute to an equitable post-pandemic economic recovery, including short term job training and 21st century job skills.
